Handmade in Portugal

Cast, trimmed, and glazed by hand at a family atelier in northern Portugal. No two pots are identical. The small imperfections between pieces are part of the edition.

The story

Designed in Prague.
Made in Portugal.

It started as a sketch — what if the most recognised bag in the world became a planter? Not a parody, not a souvenir, but a serious ceramic object that earns its place.

Niia works with a small atelier in northern Portugal that has been throwing and glazing by hand for three generations. The Blue Tote Pot is their most technically complex piece — the trapezoid silhouette requires a custom mould, and the yellow handle glaze is applied in two separate firings.

The result is an object that rewards a second look. And a third.

Design

Proportions taken directly from the original silhouette — measured, scaled, and redrawn by hand in Prague until every curve was right.

Custom mould

A bespoke trapezoid mould was tooled specifically for Edition 001. No standard ceramic form could produce the bag's distinctive shoulders.

Hand-thrown

Cast, trimmed, and finished by hand at a family atelier in northern Portugal that has been making ceramics for three generations.

Bisque firing

Each shaped piece is bisque-fired to harden the clay body before any glaze is applied. Inspected by hand — any cracks are rejected at this stage.

Two-stage glaze

The cobalt blue body glaze and the matte yellow handle glaze are applied and fired in two separate passes to prevent colour bleed at the boundary.

1,260 °C kiln

An 18-hour stoneware firing creates the durable, non-porous finish. Each piece is numbered and signed by the maker before it ships.

Expected Q4 2026. Each pot is hand-made to order in northern Portugal, so production takes time. We'll keep you updated via email if anything changes.

Currently EU only with free shipping. For non-EU enquiries, email us — we'll do our best to accommodate.

Is the glaze food-safe?+

Yes. Both the cobalt blue body glaze and the matte yellow handle glaze are food-safe and lead-free. The interior is also glazed and food-safe.

Will there be more editions?+

Edition 001 is 200 pieces with no restock. Future editions may exist but will differ — different colourway, different number. The first edition is the first edition.
